Affectionately known as “Mr. Philanthropy,” Gord Durnan has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his years of service to community and philanthropy.
Nominated by the Muskoka Community Foundation, Gord was recognized on March 20, 2025, for his longstanding commitment to building strong, healthy, and caring communities across Muskoka and beyond.
A founding member of our Foundation, Gord has served in many roles on the Board of Directors. He continues to be a champion of the Muskoka Community Foundation and an advocate for charitable giving. Gord’s impact has rippled throughout our communities. He has supported both new and established organizations, and served on countless boards and committees, including the Community Foundations of Canada.
Executive Director Lynn DeCaro had the great pleasure of celebrating with Gord and Dave Uffelmann, MCF donor, past chair of the Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation, and former Community Foundations of Canada Board member. It was truly an honour to be part of this moment, recognizing not just Gord’s incredible legacy, but also the power of community and the importance of giving back.
“The Community Foundation now touches base across Muskoka, in every community from top to bottom, east to west, and the whole gamut of charitable and nonprofit organizations that make Muskoka the quality place it is to live. And where we start to learn and give back to our neighbours, and to those who bring life and value to living in Muskoka. I’m very proud to have been part of this from the very beginning. I’m still a cheerleader.” — Gord Durnan
As a Community Foundation operating on the traditional lands of the Ojibway, the Chippewa, the Algonquin and the Odawa, and home to three sovereign nations – Wahta Mohawks First Nations, Moose Deer Point First Nation and the Moon River Métis – we cannot walk in a good way if we do not honour all our relations in our communities, and actively work to address the impacts of colonialism on Indigenous peoples on these lands, both past and present.
